Cleaning Dogs Ears

Options
One of our Springers has lots of muck in her ears. We have used the ear cleaning stuff from the vet such as Leo and CleanAural but I was wondering if there are any alternative (and cheaper) products that people have used.

Thank you

my mum used to carefully use a cotton bud and try gently to scoop out muck, not tried this myself as pup hasn't had mucky ears, not sure if she did the right thing, but she would always go careful.

Can you ring a vet nurse for advice?
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

The trouble with spaniels is they they can have very narrow ear canels which become a breeding ground for ear mites - hence the gunk and on going cleaning

I use canaural from the vets - its only a couple of pound as I dont need a consult and that does for some reason kill the mites. I also treated him with advocate - also a mite killer. I clean his ears every couple of days with just an ear wash from the pet shop. I also keep the inside of his ears clipped short so a lot easier to keep gunk free.

Now there is an old remedy called thornit. All the spaniel forums I use have owners and breeders swear by it. Its a powder. You clean and dry the ears and put a wee pinch in making sure it gets into the ear fully. It does pong a bit and if the pong is too strong you have used too much. Most who advocate the use of it say weekly treating eradicates the ear mites. You cant get thornit from the vets as its a herbal remedy - google it for stockists. My hubby is not convinced and refuses to allow me to use it any more but I have to say his ears certainly were a lot better when I did

Another vote for Thornit - my dog had horrible ears despite having them cleaned under GA twice and daily cleaning with canaural for what seemed like forever. I used Thornit for about 4 weeks (a little bit goes a very long way!) and he's now on Avocate and hasn't had a problem for 2 or 3 years.

Thanks. I'll have a look at Thornit. She doesn't have any signs of infection, her ears aren't red or swollen and she's not scratching at them, they just regulalry need a good clean. I was just interested to see if there's an alternative remedy to those you can get at the vets.
