Comet Hell and 36 HOUR Laptop broken...

Evening all, I hope someone can help with with this problem.

Knowing better, I couldn't have got the laptop from comet, but it was the best price I could find and it was what I wanted.....

I got the laptop from Exeter store after the Plymouth store didn't have any. I got the Acer laptop for £599.99 and I took it home happy for a good deal.

As I work in IT and I wanted to get rid of the !!!! on the laptop, I formatted the C Drive and left the Acer recovery and stuff on the HD and used my technet Vista Ultimate and reinstalled Vista.

The format didn't got well, the install failed a few times and I suspected the hard drive. 4 time i tryed the installer and on the 5th, it worked. I have used this CD several times.

This was thursday night, I came home from work on Friday and turned on the laptop only to fail to load vista, I moved the laptop to my ear and I could hear the tail - tail sign of a failing laptop hard drive. The machine was just over 30 hours old. No problem, I can take it back and comet will help me as its a new machine, its DOA :) Nope.........

The IT expert at comet (OMG - to quote "It can't be the hard drive,as it would be noiser") said was "we have to send it back to acer and get a repair, and we can't do that until monday and it takes 2 / 3 weeks. You can't get a refund or a new PC. You must have tamperted with the master boot record when formating the HD. Oh, and why did you format it, you shoudln't have done that". I was quite mad with this as she didn't know what she was talking about.

Now the question is, where do I stand ? I know the HD was faulty and I would have be happy to take a new laptop, I didn't really want my money back, but now I want a full refund. I got the laptop on my CC and I have already rung them to get the forms. Can I gto back to comet and kick up hell, I wouldn't even mind taking them to court, for the hell they they have put me through.

Many help on this would be great, oh, and where can I get a new laptop (NOT DELL (As I have a dell laptop also which doesn't work, but is going back for a full refund) or COMET NOW)

Thanks all

Keith

What do you want? Seems you have formatted the hard drive and then want some recourse from Comet?

(I am glad my healpline at work is in India!)

He formatted the HDD - but it's not working right. The reason for this (the OP thinks) is because the HDD is borked.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

The HD is borked, thats my problem. I have tryed to recover by using the Alt-F10 and boot from several Vista disks to no avail.

The goods are faulty and you can reject them under normal contract law.

Hard drives are designed to be formatted, you have every right to attempt to use you goods for the purpose for which they were designed.

You are entitled to a full refund.

Don't wait for them to get back to you, write to the head office (recorded) rejecting the goods because the hard drive failed after 2 days use.

i have always had excelllent service from Comet, you do get the odd jobsworth
who doesnt know his irse from his elbow. Take it back, stand your ground and go up and down the shop complaing in a very loud voice. (calmly) spouting the sale of goods act, they will soon refund you.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
