If you don't have a Windows install disk, you may need to use the Super Grub Boot Disk to repair the MBR. It's not particularly easy to use, but when you get to know it, it works well in my experience.

Managed to burn this to a CD.
It was unable to fix anything though, and most of the options said the file was not found.

I think it's well and truly knackered.

Out of interest, do you still have the serial number for your previous XP installation?

There is nothing at all wrong with downloading an ISO image of the Windows XP installation CD - the problems start when you use counterfeit serial numbers.

Just seen post #12 - sounds like it's time for a new motherboard and/or harddrive to me. :(

It was a counterfeit version (already on when I got given the PC). The serial number was on the disc which I've lost.

I wish I could afford that. I'll just have to use it from the CD.

Does it pick up your other drives ok? Sounds like the drive might be dead, but there's chance that the controller might be damaged.↲↲Try another drive in place of the current drive, if possible.

My charger still works, despite it being melted a bit. :) I thought I'd check it before buying a new one.
