How to cancel a CC?

I rang Barclaycard the other week asking to cancel my credit card. After 17 years with them I was tired of having no benefits from it (high interest, loss of nectar, treatment by Barclays trying to open a current accout).

The guy on customer services tried to persuade me to stay with them - 17 years with them, reduce the interest rate to 12%, affect my credit rating etc etc but told him I wanted to cancel.

Lo and behold, received a letter from them saying "thank you for deciding to stay with Barclaycard" - which dimension do these people live in. When you cancel a card surely that means you want to cancel it?

  • normally you have to write them a letter to get them to take you seriously.. doesn't always work though.. I still have a natwest bank account that they just won't close!!

With Amex and Capital one they both took instructions over the phone.
Of course they tried to persuade me to stay but when I made it clear I wasn't going to change my mind they closed them.

Strangely I've never had any hassle closing anything.
