How to cancel a CC?

in Credit cards
I rang Barclaycard the other week asking to cancel my credit card. After 17 years with them I was tired of having no benefits from it (high interest, loss of nectar, treatment by Barclays trying to open a current accout).
The guy on customer services tried to persuade me to stay with them - 17 years with them, reduce the interest rate to 12%, affect my credit rating etc etc but told him I wanted to cancel.
Lo and behold, received a letter from them saying "thank you for deciding to stay with Barclaycard" - which dimension do these people live in. When you cancel a card surely that means you want to cancel it?

normally you have to write them a letter to get them to take you seriously.. doesn't always work though.. I still have a natwest bank account that they just won't close!!Student moneysaving club - member no. 6Uni Reading0

With Amex and Capital one they both took instructions over the phone.
Of course they tried to persuade me to stay but when I made it clear I wasn't going to change my mind they closed them.
Strangely I've never had any hassle closing anything.0
