I'm not buying anything for the freezer that comes in a box any more
That means no more burgers, frozen battered fish, chicken in breadcrumbs, etc.
It's full of chemicals and costs a lot.
I now need to learn how to make my own fish fingers, that's what I'll miss the most................

Fish fingers thread

How about making goujons instead? ... they look like fish fingers
Fillet your fish, cut into strips, dip in flour, then beaten egg, then breadcrumbs, then shallow fry.

I've always wondered about goujons. Where on a fish - and a chicken - it's not as if their anatomy is that similar - are they? The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0

On a chicken, just behind the nuggets.
On a fish, in between the second and third fingers.0 -

Seriously though I think the poster is right, its far tastier to make your own stuff than fill the freezer up with shop made junk. It may be easier timewise, but I always used a Sunday morning to make stuff for my freezer when my kids were small. Fish cakes are so cheap and easy to make and freeze beautifully. HM burgers mean you at least know what is in the kids food and can sneakily add some chopped veg, carrot or peppers so they don't notice what they are eating.
Last night I had from my freezer a nice Lamb hot pot that I had cooked and portioned up a few weeks ago. 4 x portions cost me around £1,80, thats 45p per dinner plus a few vegetables. A portion of the same from a freezer shop costs around £2.00. I have a collection of the plastic chinese containers that I have collected from my DD's after they have had a take-away and washed out they make great one portion sizes for me .I make chillie, spag bol, casseroles ect and portion them all up for my freezer. If I do a shepards pie I put it in a small earthenware bowl with the mash alrready on the top so it goes straight from the freezer to microwave to table. If you look also at the sizes of the boxes and the size of the food when you take it out there is ,,,shall I say quite a bit of room in those boxes so you think you are buying a bigger portion than you actually are.Plus of course all that wasted cardboard and packing .
No I'd say have a go and maybe if its only one thing at a time once a week you will soon find that you are saving a significant amount of money by D.I.Y.ing your own food.0 -
Couldn't agree more, JackieO, the cost saving really is significant, and there's also the satisfaction of knowing exactly what's in your food and that you've made it all from scratch. I love it!Life is not a dress rehearsal.0

I'd like that hotpot recipe, it sounds healthy, tasty and economical.
When I eat something out of a box, I'm always aware of all the stuff that's packed into the food (to make the weight up?) loads of salt and fat and Goodness knows what else?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

I make fish fingers for DS. As someone else said just strips of cod floured, egged and breadcrumbed.....I then freeze them on a tray then transfer them to a freezer bag once frozen so they don`t stick together.0

Since mad cow disease was rife when my children were teenagers, I made burgers from scratch. I make homemade meatballs, meat loaf and burgers and freeze them. I split the portions and add garlic and chilli to some to give varity to them. I'd NEVER buy frozen minced products but that's just a hangover from the mad cow days." The greatest wealth is to live content with little."
