New Vodafone SIM not given to anyone...

I just got a new payg sim this week direct from Vodafone, I haven't given it to anyone yet. It was brand new and sealed. Yet, I have today received a call from 08450 554454 which I missed (I don't have voicemail set up). I googled the number and it appears it may be Kitchens Direct? If so, how could they get this brand new number?

    Numbers are recycled.

For example, say I had a contract phone 2 years ago which closed. For around 6 months, the telephone number will become dormant and not in use. After this time, the number will be recycled and issued.

It may be that you have a recycled number that has been used before, rather than a brand new number.

    How frustrating.
Thanks very much for the info.

Another reason for this is that sales companies will call sequential numbers until they get one that rings. Automated dialling systems do this for them and put the successful call through to a salesman - that's why you get a silent call quite often.

Kitchens Direct are well known for doing this...

You can register your mobile with the TPS to stop them calling further.

I was getting daily calls from Domestic and General after joining Sky and, after registering, it stopped a couple of weeks later.

numbers are sold in bulk to various marketing companies by all mobile companies after you purchase it. this explains call from companies offfering you cheaper insurance after a phone purchase, at usually atrocious rates.
i tend to put such numbers under nuisance caller and my phone rejects it.
