Loss of no claims bonus

My car has just failed its MOT and its not worth repairing. My insurance is due for renewal on 1st June 2009 and I will have earned 5 years no claims bonus then. If I have not managed to get another car by then, wIll I lose my no claims bonus as I won't have had continuous insurance?

Insurance companies have different polices on this. Some will allow up to 2 years gap between insurances and still honour your no claims bonus - esure used to be one of these companies but don't know if that is still the case. When you get your new car, used confused or similar to get the cheapest quotes, and then phone up the companies to find out what there policy is.

Check with your own insurance company as well - they may be prepared to suspend your policy for a period of time if you have already got rid of the car

As ShimRod said, 2 years is the industry standard. Really wouldn't worry about it

There are Insurers including Norwich Union who will accept the no claims bonus up to three years from the last expiry of the policy.

You can also gain an extension by taking out cover then cancelling it after say two weeks (You will obviously incurr charge for this but it could save you money in the long run) which will give you another two / three years from the expiry of the new policy

    Hi DaCouch, Forum Members:

Do you know of any other insurers who accept no claims discount which is up to 3 years old? Will really appreciate if you could help.
