Credit Cards Abroad????

in Credit cards
I've recently booked a holiday to Italy, booking hotels with my credit card direct with the hotel. I've since found advice on this website that says when spending abroad apply for specific cards that don't charge extra for using them in Europe (a European load?) Does this mean that what I have paid for using my original credit card will have extra charges applied? Is this normal practice that I just didn't realise? And do you have any idea how much extra I will get charged for doing this? Thanks for anyone's help!!!

most credit cards charge about 3% for foreign currency transactions... exceptions are Nationwide (in europe ) , post office, abbey zero
check your T&Cs (look up on the website if necesary)0
