AVG will (IMO) keep you just as well protected as Norton, but good luck trying to remove Norton from your system First! (You'll need to download the removal tool from $ymantec).

What I would do is download the free anti-virus program of your choice. I use Avast!, available here: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
Save the downloaded file somewhere where you can find it later.
Then download the free Firewall of your choice. I use the Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall, available here: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm
Again, save the downloaded program somewhere you can find it later. This is an evaluation version of the Firewall. It will run as the full version for 30 days, you will get numerous reminders that the evaluation period is about to run out, which you can ignore, and it will then automatically switch off the advanced features and continue to run as the free version.
Disconnect from the Internet.
Click START....Control Panel and double click Add/Remove Programs.
Click on Remove against the Norton programs.
Go to this webpage: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sunset-c2001kb.nsf/1c88841b1a46fa8885256ee600534d6c/6bda05684c3c813e85256ede004ddaf6?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam&seg=ag
Download the removal tool and follow the instructions on the webpage.
Instal your new anti-virus and Firewall programs (double click on the downloaded programs), one at a time. Restart your computer when prompted, ensuring that it doesn't connect to the Internet until both are installed.
Reconnect to the Internet.
