Buildings insurance for older properties

Anyone out there suggest some companies to try for buildings insurance on my 1800s house, it's constructed of brick and wood and this seems to be the excuse for hiking the premium. We have to have fire extinguishers and fire blankets all over the place. My premium from the Halifax this year (our mortgage provider -although paid this off some time ago) is £455.73 and every year they add on a large amount. We've been with them for years and years and never made a claim. I did try shopping around a bit last year but the usual companies werent interested due to the construction of the building, however I managed to get the Halifax to reduce the premium by over £100 as it was so high, which is what I might have to do again this year unless anyone can offer me any advice on going elsewhere? I thought there might be some insurers who specialise in older properties?

The price your paying for the age of house and construction looks fairly competitive as properties with wooden beams and the like are loaded due to the increased fire risk / cost of fire claims for them.

You could try a local broker who would have expertise in this area

Definitely seek advice from a reputable local insurance broker who will be able to provide you with the best advice.
If you had made a claim with Halifax ( fingers crossed you never have to) then most likley you would be finding a new Insurer now anyway - their claims service is on the whole, miserable.

Halifax are very strict on applying the exact terms of their policy, they are especially strict on storm claims
