Mortgage protection claim delay - why and what can I do?

I took out mortgage protection insurance a few months ago - an "I protect" plan with Wessex Group. I was made redundant on 6th April, and I made the claim the next day. My policy states the waiting period is 30 days and the initial exclusion period is 60 days (which I'm outside of). They requested all the usual bumf (redundancy letter, p60, evidence of job seeking etc) but I've now had a letter saying that they have appointed someone called RPS associates to interview me "in respect of my claim". Apparently I need to allow 2 hours for the interview and supply bank statements, wage slips, p45 etc (most of which they've already got). The issue is that they say they can't see me until 10th June, which will mean that I will miss May's mortgage payment as the insurance wont have kicked in.

Can they do this? Isn't the whole point of getting insurance to make sure you don't miss a payment? Rather than a 30 day period, that will make it nearly 70 days before they even make the decision. Is there anything I can do about this? And why are they doing this?

Wow, that sounds well dodgy. How could they not pay out on illness cover if someone's had a stroke?

If it wasn't on their specified list of illnesses then they wouldn't.

To the original OP, you need to it's understandable with the massive increase in claims on mortgage protection policies due to the huge rise in redundancies, it's understandable that companies feel the need to thoroughly check that claimants had absolutely no inkling of possible redundancy when they took out the policy. Especially so in the cases where the policies were taken out fairly recently.

It's unfortunate that you don't have enough to cover the mortgage whilst you wait to see if your claim is approved, but if you can't meet the payment then let your mortgage provider know asap.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Con in a book, how right you are Judy 1…………you are very perceptive.

If possible can you tell us a little more about your claim,
    1-Who the policy/claim was with?
2-When did you take out the policy?
3-When did you claim, and was it you that claimed?
4-Did you ask for, or were you provided with a policy definition for a stroke?
5-Why did the Insurance Company not pay your claim?
6-Has your medical Consultant said about a prognosis (what the future holds, recovery expectations etc)
7-Has the Medical Consultant actually stated that you have had a stroke Medical term Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA)
8- You would have had a CT scan do you know results?
I understand you have already involved the FOS, do you know that, although the complaint is being dealt with by the FOS, it is still possible to submit further evidence for your claim?, it would therefore be helpful to know what evidence you have sent to the FOS, to see if you have possibly forgot something.

I hope you are recovering from having your stroke, it is a long road, but I’m sure you will sort things.

As for the agent being sent to jail, shame he didn’t take a few of the IC’s with him!!!

I wish you well and hope you have a speedy recovery.

A Stroke is part of the “core conditions” within the ABI’s Statement of Good practice, and although you are probably correct in saying the above, it is unlikely that many IC’s don’t have it as a condition in their CI cover.

Although of course IC’s please themselves so anything is possible.
