WANTED : Cheap Firebowl Gel Fuel Refill Tins

Mods - apologies if this is in the wrong section ...

I recently bought a couple of firebowls from next - great indoor decorations and talking points.

Only trouble is that the fuel fel refills seem excessively expensive at £10.00 for two x 350g tins (each giving 2-3 hours burn time)

Does anybody know where these might be got cheaper - I've had a search around but everywhere seems to be about £5 each!

They do need to be the 350g tins ... as that is what fits the bowls.

Here is a link to what they look like ... (large picture so didn;t want to included it in this post - from an ebay ad where the seller wants £120 for 24 tins!)

Can you refill your tins with the bottled 'fire gel'? I think this works out cheapest.
Look here for what it looks like.

Thanks for unearthing this - 12 x 1 litre bottles = £25, so around £2.10 per litre, so on the surface this looks a good deal.

However, the first tins that I've used are "well burnt out" after one use, so I am unsure if they are designed to be refilled.

Also, it was a very thick gel - solid like jelly actually, whereas this presumably is a lot "thinner" so that it can be poured out.

In essence I think I probably need tins, although if nobody else can turn anything up then I might take a gamble on a small quantity (4 bottles for £14) and try them once!
  • I would recommend you go for the bottled variety as already suggested. I also have used the 350g tins (£8.99 for twin pack in Homebase), but refilled them easily from the bottles. They seem to be holding up so far, albeit a little darkened around the edges.

The stuff in bottles is a bit more 'gloopy' than in the tins, so it does pour out. This stuff will save you a bomb on buying tins, plus it has two other beneifts:

    - It gives off virtuall no smell (the tinned stuff, which I think was called Green Fuel or similar, smells realy pungent by comparison).

    - It burns with a larger, more colourful flame (more orange like a real fire instead of blue like a gas flame).

    Regards,

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but I was wondering how you got on with the refills? I've just bought a firebowl myself so am keen to keep it as cheap as possible for refilling!

    Cheers.

  • Hi - sorry for late response - only just seen this.

the "liquid" was "ok" .. very difficult to light but once lit stayed burning for a while.

would still prefer gel tins -- but at present still got 1/2 of the liquid left!!

Sterno gel chafing fuel is the pucker professional version as used in table warmers at indian restaurants. It comes in 4.2kg catering sized tins from various wholesalers for £10 or a kitchen supply shop should be able to help. Alternatively Nisbets do a 200g tin for £0.79. If the can size is wrong just scoop it out into the size tin you prefer with a spoon. Its a bright pink thick jelly not a liquid and burns for 2 hours plus.

  • Glad this thread has been resurrected.

I was given not 1, but 2 NEXT firebowls, but no gel came with either of them.

They don't have for sale at the moment as they only have their sale stuff on.

    Does anyone have either

    - an item number so I can get some from Next

    or

    - help me with what I need to buy???

  • Firebowl Fuel Pack£10

Pack of 2 x 350g fuel tins. Fits all firebowls. Up to 3 hours burn time per tin. Next Order number - 264-981-X41

Im in the process of weighing up other options previously mentioned in this thread however, as £10 for 6 hours burn time is quite expensive....although i got my firebowl in NEXT half price sale the fuel packs were not on sale.
  • Just noticed on Ebay someone is selling Marks and Spencer Fuel packs...look exactly the same as the NEXT gel packs...just the wrapping is different....you can get 2 x 250g for £8, 12 x 250g for £48....so saving a few pounds!
