Contents Insurance Claim

Hi,

I'm new around here and wanted some advice.

I am in the process of making a claim for my oven which broke a few days ago. I have like for like insurance and I paid £700+ for my current oven 8 years ago which was top of the line of its particular make.

The insurance company are offering me £450 in vouchers with a high street store to replace it. I am not at all happy with this as you get what you pay for at the end of the day and there are features on my current oven that are not on the suggested replacement. Can I argue or insist that I am given the option to choose an oven of the same value as my old oven i.e. £700? I also would prefer a cheque to be sent so I can find a better deal online as the high street store does charge more.

Thanks.

This is the only basis on which you can argue. The cost of like for like models will decrease over time so you can not expect to get a full £700 from the insurer. You can not insist on cash, though you may ask for it and usually the insurer will offer you less than the vouchers because they actualy pay less than those vouchers face value.

You are entitled for a like for like new-for-old, so if you can't get something with the same features you should definatly go back to them. Find the examples that you regard as like for like along with the specification of the old one and show the insurer. Send the claims handler an email so it is in writing and support this with a phone call.

I'm actually interested in knowing which company offers a contents policy that pays out on an oven that breaks down? I've never heard of this before from an insurance company.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Is it some sort of extended warranty you are claiming on and not contents insurance? How can you claim for a broken down oven on your house insurance unless there was fire/flood/theft? No wonder insurance premiums are high.
