sell the car?
A few months in to my first job I took out a rather large loan and bought a car with a 1.8 turbo engine. Great.
Now i'm in my second job, and find myself on a 2 hour round trip commute - equating to about £200 a month on petrol, including social miles. Add this to the £274 loan repayments, and thats about £500 a month, just to get to work and back!
I really want to cut back on my fuel bill - any suggestions?
I've bought 2nd hand cars before and given that mines runs well I'd be gutted if I bought a new (older, diesel) car just to find that it needed work done a few months down the line
If I sell my car, I'll need to accept that it's depreciated and then suffer depreciation again if I buy another one!

I had a similar problem, but I sold my pride and joy to get a diesel motorway cruncher.
I think I made the wrong decision. I'm not saving a huge amount more in all honesty, and I'm definately less happy than before.
Dunno, how important is it to you? Bear in mind a second car would also probably cost you more in total due to tax, insurance (together probably an extra £30 a month) initial outlay and maintenance. so you've only really got two options.DONE: Great North Run 09! Thanks - making the wrong decision is what i'm scared of! I knew someone that just bought a diesel (astra 1.7d ) and gets about 48mpg. I can push 36mpg on commute! take into account the possibility of a new second hand car going wrong, higher servicein etc and I could be almost back where I started, and not even driving a car I enjoy driving! that would be gutting0

even with those figures, if you're spending £200 a month on petrol, you'd still only be saving £50 a month getting a swampy-the-eco-warrior mobile. Tax wouldnt be any cheaper.
I know what I'd do, and it would be to keep the 1.8T.DONE: Great North Run 09! Raised £452 for the National Autistic Society

i'm with Sean keep the turbo.
You may get a few more miles but half the fun and probably won't save a massive amount.0 -
When my DD was born my MR2 was useless so my dad lent me money to buy a 206 1.4 don't get me wrong I love my little car dead cheap tax/insurance but it has no soul and it is v little dif in petrol to my MR2 1.8
Keep the car my Mr2 is in my dads garage waiting to go into auto trader and i go and talk to him. I loved that car with my heart and soul,0 -
As everyone has said, keep the car. If you was driving a real petrol drinking car such as an Evo or Impreza then you would have reason to panic but at the moment the petrol situation isnt dire enough to get onto the diesel motorway vehicle.0
