TV Licencing

I don't think much of this lot as it is, but anyway...

I received a letter from them advising of the benefits of Direct Debit. However, they make you pay for your next licence 6 months before your old one has run out!

Yeah, great deal (!).

In fact they make you pay for half the licence in advance and half the licence in arrears. So there is no financial benefit to paying by DD, just convenience.

I pay that years license then cancel the direct debit til it comes round again. I write them a cheeky letter each time since they love sending cheeky letters to you! I've said 3 times now there should be an option to pay for it in advance, you shouldnt be forced to pay for someone basically upto 18 months in advance ESPECIALLY when we dont have a choice to pay for it. TV license makes me mad, but please this isnt the place for a discussion on this :)

So, yet again a private firm are allowed to make money from the consumer for doing nothing.

It wouldn't be so bad if it were actually a Govt. institution that has the money for the 6 months earning interest - at least that way it would be (ulitmately) going back to the country.

(I believe the licencing finance is handled by Capita, please correct me if I am wrong.)
  • Worse still if you pay quarterly by DD as you have to pay an additional charge of £5 for this "service" spread over the 4 payments yet if you pay monthly or yearly there is no charge (though i think 6 months of the licence fee in advance put into a high interest account would probably go some way to it!!) we have changed ours to monthly at least that way we keep the fiver.
    coming into the light......

It is 'handled' by Capita - but that's not the same as the money going into their Bank account. It's paid over to NTVLRO. As in the same manner Capita 'handle' a lot of Govt monthly pension payments - but the money isn't from their account.
They only act as a facility organisation

Couldnt agree more with the above comments. TV Licencing payments are manisfestly inflexible and 'ripping' people off. It is actually nothing more than a utility that needs to be paid for, although I dont agree with the principle of a public service braodcaster (it is actually is no better than Commercial TV).

The BBC does not spend all its money at one time, it spreads it over the year so how can it be justified to charge an additional £5 for quarterly DD or make people pay in advance for paying monthly? I sent an email to the TV Lcencing Agency a few years ago maing these points, I got an email back explaining that the regulation comes from the Wireless Telegraphy Act 19** blah blah blah...........

...I have to have two licences!..........and dont even start me on the fact that MP's who have two houses are not required to have an additional licence....................

Minor revenge. You can pay for your license by credit card with all the benefits of this form of payment (interest free period and/or cashback)

Not to worry Capita have taken over the human resource contract of the BBC. See here !
So they make you pay your TV licence and and get to choose who does what in the BBC. This may be overstating things as the workings and actions/need for, of HR departments remain a mystery to me.

lol, Capita also look after the congestion charges in London so I suppose you could extend your conspiracy theory to them also controlling who can go and visit the BBC too :-\
