I've a Fuji S8000fd. During a tour of S Africa I attempted to take some flash photos of dance lit by torches, so the light was very low and the dancers not that near.
I've managed to bring up the detail from very dark image on the card, but even then, the participants being the colour they are, only those in the foreground are really visible. Can anyone suggest a way to improve on the mid and backgrounds?

Use the levels tool in Photoshop or something similar like Paint.Net. However you'll lose colour definition and likely to get a very grainy image, but there will be more detail there...0

Photoshop and Photoshop Elements have a very cool Shadows/Highlights tool.
