late 90s VAG Estate: Audi A4 vs Golf

I've got a Mk3 Golf 1.9 TDi that I bought for £450 a few weeks ago.
I'm really impressed with the TDi engine, though reckon a bit more power wouldn't go amiss.
Because the shell has a few issues (big dent in rear 1/4 on one side, keyed all round) I've been trying to find a cleaner car in the same style.

I'm trying to find a near poverty spec model because I don't want a sunroof or aircon, climate control or any of that sort of tat.

I've been looking around on Autotrader and Golf TDis are quite rare, but there are loads of Audi A4's.

I assume that these are near enough the same car, in terms of platform and engines.

Prices seem pretty good - there's 2000 year cars in good condition with low 100,000s of miles on them going for £1500-2500.

I noticed that the TDi 110 and 115 engines are offered too. I've had a quick look at the specs and it looks like the A4 is no heavier than the Golf (I want the power to weight ratio at an acceptable value).

So, it looks like the A4 might actually be a better solution to my problem. Then, of course, there's the 2.5 TDi, now that might be interesting.

I'm just wondering what people's experiences are of either of these cars.

The 2.5 is a great engine. Specially for sitting on the motorway in!

However, you do hear lots of horror stories of the cambelt snapping.

Though - when we have replaced belts, generally it's the 1.9's which seem a bit more worn out.

That said, the 2.5 will be a great car as they are cheaper to buy as they are deemed to be a bit of a lemon.
  • I ran a 1.9TDi (1998) A4 for 4 years over 80,000 miles, and it was a fantastic car. The only problem was a failed MAF, other than that it was fine. Brakes are over-servoed, and it isn't exactly a responsive car (front heavy and FWD).

The climate control is well worth having, although I think from 2000 it is standard on all models.
