Hi all
As per my subject title to cut a long story short my sister has being paying quartley bills from BT when the majority of the numbers on the itemised bill she has receives are numbers she does and has never recognised
She has advised BT of this on numerous occassions and BT have advised that they have done enough testing of the line to conclude the numbers on the itemised phones are number she has dialled. A lot of these number are London 0207 / 0208 numbers when she knows no one in London
Another concern she had was a lot of times when attempting to make an outgoing call her phone line would come up with an engaged tone or when for instance I tried to call the line it would be engaged even though she is not using the phone
Ive only just advised all this information via my Mum so me being the big brother and all that Im going to call BT tomorrow but before I do just need to know if anyone has had issues with phone numbers popping up on BT itemised bills that they do not recognise?
Sorry for the long post folks
Much appreciated

Does she know anyone abroad who she or anyone in the house.
My son lived in Amsterdam and he had a skype connection which enabled him to have a UK number. So i could actually phone him at weekends/evening for free but was charged during the day.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I know it's a bit outdated, but she isn't on internet dial up is she as I know with dial up there was always the danger of rogue dialers being installed, allowing people to make calls on your line.
Just to be on the safe side I've always had the internal modem disabled on my computer since getting broadband & an external modem. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Hi
Thanks for the quick reply
I should have noted that my sister does not have any internet/skype connection at all
Not even a PC
PS, not on any Dial Up service either"One Man Can Make A difference" Michael Knight KNIGHTRIDER0 -
Someone else is also connected to her line then - most likely a wiring fault at the exchange or in a nearby street cabinet.
It's unlikely to be a 'hack' (but anything's possible).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
What sort of property does she live in ??, its not unknown in flats/apartments for the BT distribution point to be in a common area
and for people to 'tag' onto someone elses line to make expensive calls then remove the connection leaving no evidence and the bill payer with a near impossible chance of arguing that they never made the calls,
I'm sure BT have a department who can look into this sort of thing but you have to get past the first line numptys who say have to pay as the calls were made on your line.....0 -
She wouldn't be the first, nor the last to be charged for calls she hasn't made. This happened to my grandmother too and my parents, the 2 bills I've checked.Order of events: Banks lose our money -> get bailed out -> were inflating GBP to cover it -> now taxing us -> next will grab your funds direct -> things get really desperate to balance the books. What should have happened?: banks go bust and we lost our money much quicker0

For the short term, ask her to keep a clock and a diary next to the phone to log all the calls she makes and recieves, also the times she tries to make a call and the line itself is 'busy'. She may well have her line on a carrier system (legally) but the calls on the other carrier are being billed to her. Check the next bill, and see there the occasions match up (or not), armed with this BT will have to look again - but I donlt think it would be problems with the line being intercepted, unless a pattern to the unkbown calls can be divined....0

Hi
My sister lives in a house. The BT engineers are coming out today to check the line as its still engaged and the billing department said they will look at the issues regarding these numbers coming up on her bill that she knows nothing of"One Man Can Make A difference" Michael Knight KNIGHTRIDER0 -

Just to let you know that the BT engineers have fixed the fault and advised my sister it was a wiring issue at her nearby green phone cabinet
