Hi,

Could somebody assist me as I have no idea of what goes with what.

I would like to make up hanging basketts from plug plants and wonder what flowers go with what? I am thinking of about 3 different varietes in a basket.

Also, what is best for pots which last and last all summer long?

Thank you
Lucylema x :j

I would put either a large Geranium or Fuscia in the centre then put something smaller around it, picking from Petunias, Bizzy Lizzy, Trailing Lobelia, Trailing Geranium/Fuscia, Begonias most garden centres will group hanging basket plants together... Of course everything comes in lots of colourways so you need to pick a basic colour scheme and then build around it..
Geraniums and Fuscias last well as do Marigolds, Lobelia, Nasturtiums, Petunias, Campanula ..........

personally i favour mass of the same flowers in each ones - probably fuschias being my favourite (and best for MSE as you can overwinter them!!)

    Or busy Lizzies for effect.

Sweet peas, Purtunas, germaniums, Nasturtiums (you keep seeds for next year) are also a good choice

Great but avoid the large leaf helichrysum (unless you have very large baskets)
Also consider lobelia (the cuttings raised one not the one in bedding boxes) trailing begonias, dichondra and lotus. Continental trailing geraniums are also profuse flowerers. Make sure you water at least once a day, in the evening, twice if there's a heatwave.

I like surfinias but some people think they are a bit over the top. One thing I have found is that they overwinter in a coolish potting shed and that it is easy to take cuttings. Like the OP fuschias (trailing) are my favorite so I put them around the edges. In one basket I put pieces of Lamium but it overwhelms everything so that one has been put to one side. Helichrysum is much nicer. I always use Nemesia and lobelia which is really easy to grow but I no longer use geraniums (pelargoniums) as they like dry conditions and plenty of sun whereas fuschia likes moisture and doesn't mind shade. Impatiens are great but not that easy to grow from seed.

SORRY, got that wrong. I was referring to the small leaves grey foliage plant that is often seen trailing right down over the edge of a hanging basket.
Helichrysum is a papery flower. I can't remember the name of the one I am referring to.

The trailing grey leafed plant is also helichrysum (petiolare) The small leafed one is ok for smaller baskets and the larger leaf varieties, being on stiffer stems, are better for 14" and above.
