how far would you walk to save 21p? who's right?

my friend buys 4 pints of milk every 2 days. she lives about 5 mins from tescos/iceland who both sell 4 pints for £1. 10-15 minutes away there is a shop selling 4 pints for 79p but my friend refuses to walk to shop. she could go at any time but can't be bothered walking the distance. my friend buys milk 182.5 days per year (365/2)
182.5*0.21 (100-78p) = 38.30 saving
am i getting sad or is she wasting money?

Your friend saves 20 minutes on each journey which I'm sure could be used more usefully over a year to save more than £3.83.

And yes, very sad. Well you did ask! :p

It's cheaper than the gym. I walk 1/4 mile uphill to save 20p and it saves me 40p a week.I enjoy walking though maybe I'm strange. On the way home I walk a mile and a half downhill that saves me £1:10 so thats £2:20. Altogether thats £2:60 a week, so £93:60 over the school year.

It should be £38 shouldn't it?

I wonder whether the £s would be offset by the increased amount of food that she would need to consume to walk the extra distance.

I just looked on a website and found a very rough figure of 100 calories per mile of walking. I'm not sure whether the 10-15 mins is from home, or extra to the Tescos/Iceland distance, but lets say its an extra half mile to go to the further shop. Then its 50 extra calories there and 50 back, that makes 18250 calories in the year, which is something like 10 days food. So that would be the equivalent of an extra 30 meals a year.

So it would depend on how much the extra you eat actually costs you (ie what foods you choose). It does seem to be getting into the realms of insignificance though, in terms of monetary gain.

Personally I'm with you, I happily walk for half an hour into town to avoid using petrol! And I value the exercise.

I agree with Broken Hearted on the *hidden* value that could be overlooked if you only look at it from an immediate financial point of view.

Yes, it is healthier to walk so in the longer term, you'll not only be saving on your milk, but also on potential prescriptions for any health issues that could arise through lack of physical activity. Then there are the environmental issues too ;) Ok, I suppose that makes me even "sadder" than the OP :o

    Interesting topic! :D

... but you might need to buy a new pair of shoes sooner!
  • In some parts of Britain, I believe, there are still milkmen that deliver directly to the door. Me, I just get it at the nearest supplier when I'm driving past, although if I had the time I would occasionally walk, but only to the nearest supplier.
