Doubt either would cope - even if they run - it would be slow!0 -
I'm another for ubuntu. I would download and install that. I wouldnt spend any money yourself but pass this information onto the guy who is getting the old pc.0

He is getting rid of it. Don't people read posts anymore?0

to be honest the end user is screwed whatever you do. as someone said 98 is slow insecure and infeasible to use now.. Xp will be slow obviously, i would not recomend ubuntu atall for novice users. However i would go with xp and tell him to fork out on abit more ram or just spend 100quid and get a better pc off ebay or something.0

Im a she, not a he! Im giving my pc to this guy because, even though it is slow, it is still quicker than his! If he doesn't like my pc then he can throw it away and carry on with his old one that was built in the dark ages! He is in his 50's and doesn't work because he has parkinsons disease and so can't afford and doesn't want a brand new, super fast pc himself. He offered to pay for my old pc but I didn't want to charge him for something I would otherwise throw away or give to charity.
My question wasn't "should I throw it away or give it to someone?" it was "should I keep xp on it or revert back to win98"
I hadn't thought about possible security issues with win98 and may just leave xp on it for him. It doesn't run too badly with xp.
Even if my tower and hard drive aren't any good for him, my monitor is bigger and nicer than the one he has at present.0 -
Leave XP on it for him, W98 can never be secure online and it is increasingly unsupported for printer drivers etc. Tell him that it will run much faster if he invests maybe £20 to upgrade the RAM to 512MB (incidentally if you had done this yourself you might not have needed to order a new computer, XP cannot run effectively on 128MB as you were originally advised). No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Whats your problem - I make a remark which tries to say the pc is worthless, get rid of it means "throw it away, dont bother giving it to anyone or selling, bin it" where as the original poster was talking of giving it to someone.
Surely just binning it is a waste - and nothing to do with the OP, who wants to pass it on to someone else, so suggesting throwing it away isn't relevant. It might be worthless to you, but not to the OP.
Other posters have been suggesting how to keep it going, why XP/98/Linux might be better - it might not be up-to-date, but will be fine for someone just starting out, as a word processor / accounts etc and this is exactly what she'd like to do.
Putting a free OS on it makes it more flexible too and saves money (a'la MSE).0
