At the moment I have a PC upstairs with a BT Voyager 100 and the XBOX will be downstairs.

Can I do something as simple as buy another modem and connect it to the phone line downstairs ?

or instead of wireless - if i buy a router (say the Netgear DG834) and a 20m ethernet cable will that work ok or will the cable be too long ? also, the cable needs to be a certain type ?

Or it is get a wireless router and then is that I would need just the adaptor to connect to the xbox or something else.

I have no idea where to start, well a few options but what is the cheapest way that works and is the easiest ?
Nice to save.

First of all, you can only have one device connected to your broadband connection at any one time. Just like you can only have one person using the telephone line at any one time. So, unless you have two phone lines (one upstairs and one downstairs) both with broadband, you can't get another modem and hook it up downstairs unless you want to be running around disconnecting one to connect another which I know would get on my nerves.

You can get a Netgear DG834 or some other ADSL Modem Router and you should be able to run an ethernet cable from the router upstairs down to the XBOX but you really need a box without plugs on which you then terminate and use a patch cable from a socket. This can be expensive but you could always look into it.

Alternatively get a Wireless ADSL Broadband Modem Router like the Netgear DG834G. You can connect your PC either wirelessly or with a cheap patch cable if the router is close to the PC. (You'll need a LAN card for the cable to plug into though) You can then receive the wireless signal downstairs with a Wireless Bridge which you then connect an ethernet cable to and plug into the XBOX. This looks like what you'll need for this: http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=17339552525&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=78052 Netgear WGE111

    I hope this helps :)

Thanks, so in theory I could buy another modem and as long as I switch the one off upstairs I can connect the xbox straight to one downstairs and away it will go ?

The wireless option looks great, but I'm trying to make it as cheap as possible so I could start off by buying the DG834G and then connect that up downstarirs until I can afford the WGE111 if it will work that is. I know that adds a bit of hassle to having to turn it off but it would only be for a while.

In theory you could just get another modem, but it would need an RJ45 output for the ethernet cable to connect between the modem and XBOX. A USB output adds unnecessary complications and in fact, I don't even know if it is possible. You shouldn't have any problems once you set the modem up correctly with your username and password, hopefully. ;)

What i did was make my own ethernet cables from downstairs to upstairs. I then set up ICS on my pc to share my broadband connection and now all works fine :D

I can also stream my music and photos from my pc to my xbox 360 :D

    Thanks for the replies.

So something like the BT VOYAGER 205 ADSL MODEM ROUTER FIREWALl which can be had off ebay for less than £20 would work upstairs or downstairs.

How did you make you own cable as I can see you can buy them would any ethernet cable from ebay work ? I had heard something about it needing to be a certain type.

Where can I get info on how to steam media to the Xbox, would save a lot of disc burning?

It is very easy to make your own ethernet cable to run around your house - in fact the easiest thing is to get a box of ethernet cable and a few sockets which you terminate the cable with.

The best setup in your circumstances would be to run an ethernet cable from your Voyager 205, which you will need to put beside your PC, to where your XBOX will be downstairs. Then terminate it with sockets at each end. You can then patch a cable upstairs from the socket to the Voyager's Cat5 RJ45 output, and then link your computer to the internet via the USB connection. That should work a treat and will mean your computer and xbox work at the same time over the same connection.

The hard part is running in the ethernet cable. Once you get the voyager and a few patch cables it should be a simple job of connecting the leads and entering a few usernames and passwords. ;)

    I hope this helps :)

You gotta make an ethernet cable into a crossover ethernet cable if you were to make your own. Just find a guide on this internet.

As for streaming media, if you only got an original xbox you need to softmod it, but i wont go into how to do that,

If its a 360 you got, you need to set up windows media connect or media centre depending on the type of pc you have.
