Halifax bank credit error

Hi everyone,
I've been a long time reader but this is my first query I'd like the opinion of fellow money savers.
I bank with halifax and transfer my money around on a regular basis. Last week the bank made an error and credited £500 in my account twice.
The bank previously caused great stress when I moved over to them to gain the £100 new customer incentive and all was not smooth as promised. They messed me around and caused me to pay charges on failed DD which they said wasn't their fault.
Morally the money is not mine and any other position (or company) I'd tell them and repay straight away but I decided to wait for them to realise their error, which today they have sent an email saying can I authorise them to take it back as they can't otherwise.
Can I get my own back and refuse to repay? This may be my only change on geting one up on the banks!!
Wondered what other people would do in my position?
Thanks
Ging

suprised how often this query comes up!
no the money is not yours - you cannot refuse to give it back
they did not have to ask for it back and could have taken if if they wished without asking0 -
It was the wording of the email which made me think there was a glimmer I could get my own back.
Have left the sum alone in the bank and had fully expected them to just take it without telling me.
Alas I'll have to save money the old fashioned way and not give the banks cause to charge me any interest!:D0
