Allotment and time!

Hi everyone - I'm looking for a little advice!

I have a new allotment that has been half dug and planted. Everything is starting to grow quite nicely. I also have loads of seedlings waiting to go in.

I do however have a problem in as much as I do not have the time to clear the rest of the plot in the next couple of weeks to put the seedlings out (it is covered mostly in long grass).

Is it possible to use a weed suppressing membrane over the grass, after strimming, and to plant through this?

Thanks for the help!

dont think it would work, as the grass would still strangle the seedlings. short term, but expensive option would be to cover the uncultivated area then just stand pots and grobags on the area, as you could move them around as you continue with the clearing

It would work, but only for certain types of vegetables I would guess.
Something like courgettes or squash I can see it working, other stuff would have a hard time of it. I would dig a hole, clear the weeds from that hole, add manure or something like that and plant into that, putting the membrane/cardboard/whatever around that.

I think there will be threads on the GYO grapevine forum about this.

Hi ,I have had a similar story new allotment then got an injury and unable to dig very much ,so this is what I have done .
I have covered it all over in black plastic or anything I could find free, then I peel back a bit at a time dig it over and plant.
You could cover over dig a small bit 3x3 even and plant ,just keep the rest covered so you dont get over run with weed.then the grass underneath will die back ready for when you can dig over, try it its all I can do and its keeping my plot tidy and no weed showing through,as the others on there would get annoyed with me if weeds came through ,but they are happy knowing my situation and what I have done about it .
