Try Adrian Flux and Aplan. You will need to ring them.Google for the numbers.Flux are often said to be give good quotes but poor quality service.Aplan have a top reputation all round.
I have no connection with either company.

Have you tried phoning for quotes with cheaper cars? (Like an old banger?) It might not help at all. Also, I would look at third party fire and theft as even if it is comprehensive, the last thing he will want is a claim.0

I got a good deal with Endsleigh when my son passed his driving test. It was a while back but it might be worth an enquiry.0

...just to be clear, have you got other quotes for *your* insurance with him added as a secondary driver?
The best bet's often to go with Direct Line, or one of the other companies that offer NCD to additional drivers, for a year at least just to take the edge off the first year's "proper" insurance.
(I can't remember why, but Quinn Direct were also pretty cheap when I looked for my first policy...)0 -
Try CIS, they are pretty good for young drivers.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I had the same problem when trying to find insurance for my 17 yr old son, Endsleigh came out with the best quote for third party, fire and theft....even though he managed to have an accident within the first few weeks... Thankfully the other party admitted liability so the claim was pretty straight forward and Endsleigh were brilliant throughout0

The no claims bonus for named drivers cannot be transferred to other insurance companies so he would be stuck with Direct Line or have zero no claims bonus at the end of the year.
Only thing I can suggest is when getting quotes, put an older driver down as a secondary driver of the car. It's not illegal to do this if he is the main driver and is listed as the main driver. Even if the secondary person never drives it, it can sometimes help to reduce the policy price a little.0 -
£2K on own policy is about the cheapest he will get.
If the car and policy is in your name and your are main driver they will still likely charge close to the same because they are basing the risk on him ( might get some lee-way if its the only car in family) - if you are the main driver of this car then you could allocate NCD which will help- but be at risk.
NU do any driver - and its not over priced- but the are saying its when other people may very occasionaly use the car.
I have 2 cars (had 2 for a while- truthfully main driver on both)-and put my son on one policy as a named driver - cost another £80pm on top of my premium ( didn't want to risk any driver which was about 1/2 the price , as think they would question a claim )Any posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -
Ford Fiesta 1.1 1991.
£1500 when I was 17 with DirectLine (third party, fire theft)0 -
its because he's a boy!!!
My dad called to get me a quote a few years ago, baulked at the cost and the operator said "at least you have a daughter!" --(lol - now my little brother has passed his test too!)
I know that friends at the time used Quinn Direct and I use Tesco (value).
Also i think it depends on other things like your postcode. To take my car to uni would have cost double because of the Manchester postcode!0
