BT, moving home - problems taking my old number with me.

I moved home last week for the third time in five years. Each time I've moved BT have transferred my number successfully (I've moved within same town) so no problems. This time they told me I could take my number with me but when the move occurred, they assigned me a "provisional" phone number. When I finally got this working after they fixed a fault on the line (about 8 calls to BT from my mobile to sort that one), I then had to request my old number. It is now 7 days later, several phone calls later, each time I am told a longer waiting time, first it was four days, now it's ten. I am nearly at ten now so might as well wait, but I am interested to know if this is the normal procedure now or if this is unusual.
Moving house is stressful, so stuff like this takes on a greater significance (I want to kill everyone at BT!); but I can't even begin to sort out my broadband till my line is set up - two weeks on dialup is like a life sentence!
grrrrrrrrr....
