in Gardening
OK so I am an absolute novice with gardening. Have only recently got my first usable gardens and starting the long process of sorting it out with zero knowledge.
Anywhoo
Went to plant my daughters sunflower in garden, started digging a hole (as you do) and about three inches under the soil found a layer of fabric. Tried another patch and it was there too, under the soil. Border I was trying is next to a dividing fence and fabric looks a bit like black hessian type material. Looks like it runs under the soil the full length of the fence, no idea why it is there and don't want to try to pull it out if there's a reason why it's there iyswim?
Can anyone shed any light on it or why it is there and how do I work around it for planting? There are established plants in the border but haven't investigated too much as that kind of threw me, just expected to dig a hole and whack the plant in lol
Sorry if the answer is glaringly obvious, I am genuinely ignorant about gardening and figured one of you geniuses would know the right answer!
Much gratitude in advance

I agree it sounds like weed supressing membrane and yes I would just cut a criss cross into it and put the plant in

Have fun with your gardening adventure, I know I am
