Cant get a bank account

I currently have a joint current account with the alliance and leicester which I use to pay rent and bills. I also have a Derbyshire building society Cash account where my wages are paid into, every month I take the rent and bill money and and put it in the alliance and leicester (I do this physically Take the money out carry it up the road and go into the branch to pay it in.
I want to simpify this and transfer the funds on the net. I went to open another current account with the alliance and leicester and was turned down. I have resisted the urge to try again, so my credit rating to take a hit, but i`m not sure where I can go from here, I want to simplify my bill paying partly cause they are being paid late and they are all electronic cards, plus i`m not comfortable with carrying those sums of money throught a busy city centre. I`d appreaciate any guidance or comments.

Here's a better website detailing the basic bank accounts: http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/pdfs/bank_accounts.pdf
I would recommend the Barclays Cash Card Account, RBS/Natwest Step/Key Account, or the Co-op Cashminer Account.0 -
Could you consider paying your wages into the account you use for your bills and stuff?0
