ACER Aspire 7720Z laptop problem

Hi,
Hopefully somebody can help, a friend gave me this laptop which is like new condition. I can get to the desktop no problem at all however the only problem I have is that no matter what button I hit on the keyboard it takes me straight to the media centre.

For example tonight I went to connect the wifi and used the mouse which I had no problem, but when I tried typing in the key it took me to the media centre as stated it doesnt matter which one I hit.

I have tried rebooting the system back to factory settings but still having the same problems.

I bet I am doing something so minor but just need a little help.

Thanks all.

Steve

You don't say what Operating System it runs.

It could be a hardware fault with the keyboard, or it could be that the previous owner knows a (fairly clever) practical joker who's set up the same keyboard shortcut for every key on the keyboard!

As it's got a CD/DVD drive, the first thing I'd do is download and run a LiveCD version of one of the Linux distros - e.g. Ubuntu - which will leave the hard disk unchanged and will let you see whether it's a hardware problem or not.

If Linux runs ok, perhaps the quickest solution would simply be a re-install of the OS.

Its running Windows Vista Home Basic. I have rebooted it to original system, but am not too technical so unaware of how to resolve. I wouldnt know where to start. I will show your response to a friend who will hopefully know what you are talking about.

I spoke to Acer today who state that this is a software problem as if it was the keyboard it would not respond or do anything when you hit the buttons. The keyboard does actually work as I can type in the password when logging onto the system it is just when the sytem is loaded, when you press any button it takes to the media centre.

Anyone experience similar problems or any way (easy for an idiot) to sort this.

    Cheers
