northern ireland no switch allowed?

As long as I have lived here (moved from england) you cant have any other comapny other than Pheonix gas and their own leccy board.this makes the bills very high.....does anyone know if this will ever change?

    there is one other company in northern ireland - the name escapes me but it is not the same as here, from what I understand it depends what post code you live in as to who is the supplier and given that Northern Ireland has only had natural gas for approx 10 yrs with the majority of those able to get it living in Belfast and a few other towns there simply is not a big enough market for it and the cost of course of putting in the infrastructure if gas mains in the first place.

    the irish market, including Ulster is meant to be opening up to competition soon. i don't know when exactly i'm afraid

    Bord G!is Éireann have a licence to supply gas in certain areas of NI (check to see if you are covered). Although I think the supplier is like water companies over here, it all depends on where you live rather than who you choose to supply you.

    The Northern Irish market is already open to competition.

    The only problem is no other competitors have entered the market yet.
