Cakes at car boots?

Hi All

New to the forums and have a quick question. We have done one car boot sale and made £113, not bad I thought, that was after fee for the pitch and our refreshments (we forgot to take some!). Anyhoo, we're thinking we might do a few more and I thought I might make some fairy cakes so sell next time, my partner doesnt seem to think this is a good idea......is he right?

Thanks!

Personally I wouldn't buy homemade cakes from a carboot or a market stall regardless of how nice and clean the stall holder looked.
Only time I ever eat homemade cake is from close family because I know them and their habits :D

I never buy from burger vans either though.

At my local boot sale there's a lady who only sells home-made cakes, she's always in the same spot and I think she's known to the organisers and has their permission. Her cakes are wrapped in cellophane bags and she always has a plate of samples for people to try before they buy. She charges £3.50 for a cake:eek: I've bought from her a couple of times, her cakes are delicious, but I don't buy regularly because I'm quite capable of making my own cakes;).

I often see people selling home-made cakes at boot sales, only last week I saw homemade brownies for sale, they looked very tasty. I don't think you'd make much of a profit TBH, people wouldn't pay very much for a small cake IMO. Not sure where you'd stand legally, food safety and all that.

When I used to do car boots the highlight of the day was buying lovely homemade cakes to go with my flask of tea.

I agree some were very expensive though and i always avoided them.

Try a few and if they dont sell provided they dont have fresh cream in them you can always freeze them and eat them yourselves.

Fairy cakes or biscuits are a good idea as people can eat them as they walk round. Cakes are not so good as no one wants to carry them.

Great thanks folks! Think I might give cookies a go and maybe sell them in bundles or something.

    Thanks again!

I can answer this one for you
To sell them your kitchen needs to be inspected by environmental health
They do walk round car boots where I am those and trading standards for naughty DVDs
To be honest I wouldnt have thought it was worth the bother for you
You would need a min of a basic food hygiene certificate and then to pay for your kitchen to be inspected yearly, they are very strict as well. PLus as your selling it then you'd be self employed - tax returns etc

I also see a lot of people selling home made cakes, i only really buy off of one woman who is there each week as i think she has been inspected by environmental health.

I would say narabanekeater is rite , you do need to inspected by environmental health and hold a basic food hygiene certificate which i would think a lot of the cake sellers don't have. If someone was to point the finger and say one of your cakes made them ill you could be in a lot of trouble.

Me Mam is asked by the organisers to make cakes to be sold at the village fete each year and we sure as hell haven't had any enviromental officers round here...
