excel spreadsheey formula using look and if

Are there any excel geniuses on here?
I am trying to find the right formula to get a column in 1 spreadsheet to look at 3 other spreadsheets and if it finds a certain bit of text entered, I then want it to put it in the 1st spreadsheet.
My main problem is that if it finds it in the same cell on more than 1 sheet it then missess an impotant bit of information i need.
its for 3 spreadsheets listing actions for more than 1 person, and i want the 3th one to pull out actions belonging to 1 person.
Excel help is pretty rubbish!
