I have a Acer Aspire 5315 laptop which I have been using quite happily for just ove rthe last year to access the web. I recently deleted Norton antivirus and installed a free version of AVG.

I can now nolonger get on to the internet all I get is "Internet explorer cant display this page"

Even after removing AVG I still have no joy. Although I can still log onto MSN

Any help/ advice would be much appreciated.

Try resetting internet explorers settings (see here) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

By MSN - you mean messenger?

If you have Firefox try that and see if you can get to the web with that.

With IE - go to tools->internet settings->Connections->Lan Settings

and check all three check boxes are unchecked.

How did you 'delete' Norton? Did you use the Norton Removal tool?

Likely to be the cause of your problems if you did not.

Unfortunately I did not use a Norton removal tool , I didn't realise I should have done until after removing it

Although I have had someone with a decent knowledge of computers look at it since and he couldn't solve it either.

Cheers Jaffa and hotkee but neither of your methods worked.

Maybe you can try running the Removal Tool now or reinstalling Norton and then running the removal tool

What about your firewall - what you got running?
I have had this problem before, cant remember exact cause :-(

If you have a firewall - and you should, disable it for a couple of seconds and see if IE reaches the net.
    Turn firewall back on.

This might be a silly question but is the wireless switch on the front of the laptop switched on? Just sayin cos it happened to me once n took me a while to notice the light wasnt on next to the switch as i thought it was a software/firewall error or something.

You run the removal tool after you un-install norton anyway :p

A long shot but something may have done something to the host file, see this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/219843 and the host file is located in WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
