defaults/missed payments help

hi i have checked my credit score and have 2 late payments due to being over my credit limit for 2 months. i have been searching the forums and saw some comments stating that it becomes a default after 3 late or missed payments is this correct? i am concerned that these late payments will have adverse affect on my credit score? is this the case and how long with this stay on my report?

    also i want to look to get a mortgage within the next year is this going to be a big affect and how could i quickly improve my score if it has been affected thanks
