I cant get a bank account! HELP PLZ!

I am in a mess. I cannot get a bank account, not even a BASIC account. This week both the RBS and HSBC have refused me a basic account and i don't know where to turn next.
Im in the process of reclaiming my charges from Natwest from an old dormant account and hopefully that will enable me to clear my debts and sort my credit rating out - but that is still gunna be a few months away.
The fact that this mess was created due to excessive bank charges doesnt seem to matter
Life without a bank account is near impossible
Any advice? Has anyone been in a similar situation?
Thanks in advance.

Sorry. It's messy. I have...
A court judgement for £11,000 (the debt is between 10 people but shows on equifax as £11k individually till cleared). This will remain untill it is cleared - probably 18 months from now.
I have £750 debt with Natwest which apparantly has been written off.
I owe roughly £1,000 to the likes of Orange, Virgin, etc.
My bank accounts have always been badly managed and for that i make no excuses. The charges that have been applied have obviously not helped slow the spiral into chaos but still no-one to blame but me.
I have just returned from 2 yrs working in India but for the purpose of getting a bank account i am still on the electoral role at my mums where "we" have lived for approx 10 yrs.
I have a "benifits" post office account but i cannot even pay b'day cheques into that and when i get a job my wages cannot be paid in there either. It is solely for benifit payments.
Any more info needed to point me in the right direction just ask...0 -
I'm afraid that these things will stay on your report for about 6 years, not just until you've got them paid. But that's why you can't get an account - they see you as too high risk. I'm surprised though that they won't give you an account though with only a hole-in-the-wall card i.e. not a VISA debit, but just for cash withdrawals.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0

Abbey National(santander) and Nationwide both offer 'basic' accounts that just give you a cashcard
make sure when you get the forms that they know it is just the basic that you wantI

Are Abbey and Nationwide considered "idiot" friendly? I ask because both the RBS and HSBC basic accounts just give you a cashcard but i still got refused them...0 -
Hi, why not try the Halifax they gave me an Easycash account, which is a very basic account but you can have direct debits/standing orders etc. just no overdraft, cheque book etc.
Hope this helps
