Abbey unauthorised payment to one of my payee’s

I have an Abbey business account. In early April I tried to make a payment to HMRC Cumbernauld office. They have recently changed their account number and sort code. Despite setting the payment up several times online, it always disappeared without trace and was never completed.

Eventually I contacted Abbey who tried. Despite setting up payments they were just disappearing without going through, so they initiated a free CHAPS payment instead. Being Abbey they used the wrong reference leaving me to contact HMRC to clarify the payment was received.

And that was the end to the matter…or so I thought.

Today I noticed the exact same payment had gone out of my account yesterday. I had a cheque due to go out so luckily spotted this in time to pay funds into the account to make up the shortfall.

I did not action this payment. I contacted Abbey who claim HMRC were having problems receiving payments and it is likely the payment has finally gone through now that it is all working ok. However this has taken a month to happen and the payment was not showing up as scheduled online. They say it will take 10 days to investigate and I would be better to contact HMRC to get them to return this extra payment. They have deleted the payee to stop any further payments that may be due out.

Where do I stand with regards to this? Abbey have just sent my money off without my permission. I am very angry they have done this and seem quite happy to leave me to sort it out when they should be doing so.

    Anyone got any comments?

I have now faxed a letter off to HMRC but am not sure who is meant to sort this out. I will give them a call later today.

Does anyone know where to complain to with Abbey?

Make a complaint to abbey by all means but they are probably correct to say that HMRC can return it quicker than they can get it back for you

    I would do that first
