Lexus LS400 Replacement Cambelt

Hi
can someone tell me how much it would cost to replace a cambelt for a P reg 1996 Lexus LS400 with 38k on the clock? Also when would i need to replace it with that sort of mileage?

Should be replaced every 60k or 5 years.

Cost wise - I don't know......... I'm not at work and not have any figures to hand..

But we would change cam belt and tensioners/idlers/pulleys too at the same time - and water pump too if it looked like it needed it. Not to mention the drive belts..

Has it ever had a cam belt change? If not, you have been very lucky so far.

I Currently own a P reg - best car i have ever driven - smoth quite effortless driving

look out for:

full service history

ensure all electrics work - heated seat elements are a common failure

boot seals fail leading to water in the boot

I don't know about anyone else but I'm a bit suspicious of a car that age with such low mileage.

Unless it has been round the clock?

If not it's an average of 3000 miles a year and 8 a day!! Normally people want low mileage but in this case I would be concerned stuff would be failing due to too little use!!

What area are you in? I can't advertise who I work for but if you are in the South East, then we could be of interest to you, although alot of people do travel quite a distance to us. If you go on Lexus Owners forum, you'll probably find us anyway!

Our hourly rate is very competitive and the guys know what they are doing.

If the car you are going for is being given any warranty, we would always give it a look over and the guys would be honest - brutally so at times - like "Get rid of it............ it's a dog".

Have the same feeling but did not want to say it. Have heard of dealers/taxi drivers who turn the mileage of their cars back before sale or mot. Don't bother looking for damaged screw heads around the dashboard it is all done under bonnet with a laptop. :mad:

trouble with cars like lexus they hide their mileage very well.

Just look at the usual places, edge of the driver's seat bolster, top of the steering wheel, pedals, heel marks on the carpet, etc.

If its had a dealer service history you should be able to check the service intervals with them, that'll give you an idea as to the true mileage.

According to wikipedia, the engine in that Lexus is known as the 1UZ-FE, a 4 litre V8 with quad camshafts, producing 250bhp... The same engine is used in the following vehicles..

Expect to pay £20 for just the belt, or £150 for a timing belt kit, including the belt, belt tensioner, idlers and pulleys, another £30 for a water pump, and £100-£150 for fitting it all.

Ballpark figure... budget for £300 for the job and that should cover the whole lot, if you shop around.
