every day we get at least 4 calls that when we answer it sounds like a fax machine, 1471 just gives a withheld number but this is starting to get extremely irritating, any ideas on how we can stop it?

Obviously, it's a wrongly programmed fax (probably one sending to multiple locations and your number's been entered in error).
I'd try to receive the fax to find out where it's coming from by going onto Freecycle and picking up an old fax machine for nothing and then replying to the originator(s).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
It may be overkill, but BT have an option to "block withheld numbers".
Trouble is, while solving your problem and blocking most marketing timewasters, it can also block certain calls that you would want to receive.
And, you'll never know when the fax machine has given up, without regularly removing and adding the option.
Then again, if this fax machine rings you in the middle of every night, it's a thought!0 -
We had exactly the same, a fax calling - trouble is it was always in the middle of the night
We reported it as a nuicance call to BT and it had stopped within a couple of days. It was a fax that had been programmed with the wrong number and was dialling at night as it was cheaper. Give BT a call and they will investigate.
