graphic card dvi output only

In 2007, I got a dell e520 pc - it has in built graphic card.

But I wanted more memory so I bought the Sapphire ATI Radeon X1550 graphics card with 512MB memory I think from memory.

Anyway - I disabled the inbuilt graphics in bios and switched to the PCI ati graphics card. This is going back to 2007.

Normal connection cable from monitor to the VGA port on the graphic card rendered a black screen on the monitor.

I then had an adapter for DVI to VGA output so I put the adapater into the DVI port of the graphic card, plugged the monitor cable into the VGA output of the adapter and then graphic card does what I expect gives me the pc output.

This has lasted so far but I never worked out why it didnt work if I plugged the monitor cable into the VGA port of the graphic card.

One obvious theory, duff card (should I return it should I not - back then the DVI adapter solution worked and I was too bored to return).

Anyone have any ideas?

Try having a look in the device manager and check under the 'display adapter' settings. Sometimes the ATI software installs drivers for both the VGA and the DVI ports. If this is the case, disable the one you are not using and that might resolve your issue.

I've done something similar with my Radeon X1550. I used to run it on VGA, then finally got round to buying a DVI cable. I just plugged in the DVI (Xbox runs through VGA now) and it worked first time. You updated the ATI drivers recently? They may have a bug fix you haven't noticed.
