    1. Buy an advance ticket.
    2. Travel on a different operator's service (for most of the route NX does have competition).
    3. Sit without a reservation in one of the empty seats on the train. All trains have to have a certain number of seats left unreserved unless they're marked "reservation compulsory" in the timetable, and with this new fee-rule it should become even easier to find empty seats as fewer people will make reservations that they have little intention of using.
