Haha you've clearly not been on the end of a call from Capquest!! (Even if it IS in error)
never heard off capquest until now . But I realised a long time ago I should treat my phone number like my bank account number .I wouldn't give my Bank details to any numpty that asked ,so why do it with my phone number out .

I never gave my number out!! Capquest are a debt collection agency who decided their debtor had my number. No matter how hard I insisted no one of that name lived here they kept calling!

why bother with caller display .
surely if the phone rings you answer it anyway.

I don't if it says "WITHHELD" or "INTL". Too many cold calls and I'm registered with TPS.

Numerous threads exists about this, but to summarise quickly ...

Caller Display is free provided you make a certain minimum number of calls through BT......
Some would say the system is designed to extract extra revenue from those who pay BT only for line rental.

Caller Display is normally charged.. but it is included as part of the free "BT Privacy At Home" service.

It is scandalous that BT is leaving its loyal, long-standing customers paying through the nose for Caller Display when the service is available for free under another name.

In the BT Privacy at Home FAQ, the company tacitly acknowledges that it has been ripping off its loyal customers by £90 a year.

There's no logistical reason why subscribers to its charged Caller Display package cannot be migrated automatically to the free BT Privacy at Home service.

This is more evidence of BT's dirty business practices. Nevertheless, the odious corporation still chalks up losses of £944m.. Where's the money gone, Sir Michael?
    8. As an existing Caller Display customer, why didn't you automatically tell me about BT Privacy at Home?

We are promoting BT Privacy at Home from 1 July 2005, using a wide variety of media. It will also be included in Update, which is sent to our Consumer customers with their BT bill.
Of course, the customers who opted for online billing to save money, don't receive the BT Update leaflet and won't know a thing about it! Genius!

This is exactly what happened to me. For years I paid a premium for Caller Display, and then I found out, almost by accident on this forum, that it is now provided free under the BT Privacy at Home service. I was chuffed to find this - but on reflection, I realised I had been paying for years for something I should have been receiving for free.

Same here.. By chance, I happened to read about BT Privacy at Home in the Daily Mail newspaper, and immediately realised that we too had been ripped off by BT.

Companies like BT are very shortsighted if they think that the consumers they swindle will forgive and forget. We might not be very high principled in this country, but we do have certain limits!

As soon as I realised that we had paid hundreds of pounds for nothing, I complained and demanded an immediate refund. But BT wouldn't budge an inch. So on a point of principle, we moved to another telco (where we pay almost the same amount per month as before) and we have no intentions of ever returning to BT.

What BT did was a grotesque abuse of trust.
  • Does that mean that caller display should still be free, if I have Privacy at Home? My on-line bill is showing Privacy at Home - free, but I have also been charged for caller display. Line rental BT but calls with AOL Talk. I got this reply from AOL recently when I asked who had stopped the 1280 working - their reply:

The use of a prefix to re-route customers calls to BT was originally for testing purposes and is now unavailable. It was a business decision to stop using this prefix. If you are having a problem with AOL Talk we would be happy to help you rectify this.

I apologise for any inconvenience you feel this may have caused you.

Thanks for contacting AOL Broadband. We aim to help you have the best possible online experience. Should you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact us again

It's only free if you make at least 2 chargeable calls per month through BT which you can no longer do with AOL.

i thought caller display on BT was free? Have i missed something? :-o

It's never been free. The problem is 'free' has been used by many long term members here again and again when all the time it wasn't. It's like a 'free' mobile phone but only if you sign up for 18 months and to a contract for £300. That is not 'free'.

BT's caller ID is less 'free' than it's ever been and if it gets any less 'free' it'll... errr....not be 'free'.

There's a bit of confusion here regarding "Caller Display" and "Privacy At Home".

Privacy At Home includes Caller Display, and in addition BT register you with TPS. Privacy At Home is free, whereas if you take Caller Display individually, you may be paying for it - so there's no reason not to switch to Privacy At Home (unless you are lonely enough to enjoy receiving marketing calls).

However, even if you are on Privacy At Home, if you do not make the required minimum number of calls, then you still do get charged for Caller Display. I know this, because it's my circumstances precisely
