The £2.50 fee is set by NX for seat reservations and is payable regardless of where you book your ticket, so unless thetrainline is paying NX and not passing on the charge to you (and how likely is that?) you won't actually get the reservation you want.
I will let you know because the Trainline website clearly states that a seat has been reservedHas something changed in this respect? In the past seats were only guaranteed for children if they pay the full adult fare. It's the same on buses: children paying reduced rates are supposed to stand if there are adults without a seat.
Not sure when it changed then. I have always been able to reserve a seat against a child ticket.0 -

You should get your seat reservation fine.
The non-NX online booking sites are currently are unable to charge for these fees at present. I assume it's a software issue so for the time being the seat reservations will be free of charge.
Don't use Trainline though as they charge a booking fee, but most of the other train operators online ticket booking systerms (First Great Western for instance) use the same system as Trainline and don't charge booking fees either.0
