virus protection

hi all just after advice as to what you's consider the leading free virus protection software. My nephew asked me to sort something on his laptop and i just switched it on and he has no protection what so ever. have done ccleaner and malwarebytes but don't have a clue for virus.

Thanks all

    There are 3 main ones.
    AVG, AVIRA and AVAST
AVG is the slowest and appears to cause the most problems as well as having the worst updates
AVIRA is what I use and has by far the best definition updates but no email scanner
AVAST is slower than AVIRA and not as good virus updates but has an email scanner

Thank you to both of you's think i'll go for AVIRA he mostly uses laptop for games so i think speed would be best suited. will look into email scanners just to be safe though.
    Cheers for quick reply's.

No need to. If theres an email attachment (The only way to get something through an email) that looks dodgy, then simply scan it from the desktop
