Nottingham-London commute

Hi there, my OH works in London (Liverpool St) 3 days a week (Mon-Weds), he has to be in as early as possible, should be there for 7am really, but gets the 5.35am and gets in at 7.30, presently he is spending £809 per month on a season ticket (though he could change this to an annual for £8428), has anyone got any alternative suggestions please? Maybe other stations within a 30 mile radius which are either quicker or cheaper, or different travel options (other than get a different job ;))

We have got a spare car, so he could travel to eg Grantham, if time and moneywise it would be worthwhile (he doesn't do this already as the road to Grantham can be really slow, even in the early morning with lorries and farm traffic etc)

Many thanks . . .

Yeah, why doesn't he just buy a new place, furnish it at John Lewis and then ask the tax payers to reimburse him? I saw a load of guys doing it on the news.
  • We would do, but the damn moat bill has pretty much cleared us out

Yup, £230 per week or £809 per month

I'd have thought it cheaper to just make the one round trip a week (changing at Grantham is slightly cheaper) and stay in eg a Travelodge for Monday and Tuesday nights.

We are thinking of doing that sort of thing (or renting through spareroom.com), but I am pregnant and hormonal and I think he feels guilty about leaving me for 2 nights with the other two kids, he lived in London Mon-Fri last year and it was horrible, but I think two nights would be ok. Thanks for reply

Typical woman, blaming hormones for everything :D

As season tickets are designed for people who travel in and out every day, have you considered whether it's cheaper just to buy a separate ticket for each day he travels? That way he'd only pay for when he needs it, whereas at the moment he pays even when he's on holiday... You may even find there are cheap(er) advance tickets available if he can plan a few weeks ahead.

Have you tried a getting a ticket from nottingham to grantham and then a seperate ticket / season ticket from Grantham as it looks to be cheaper

Hi there, I haven't double-checked, but he assured me he had looked into it and as he travels there and back in peak (which he can't really avoid, certainly not in the mornings anyway) it is actually cheaper to pay for the full month, even though is only 3 days a week. When we go on holiday he buys a weekly ticket for the part month. I may be wrong, but I think it is hard to find bargains on peak travel, even in advance, though I would love to be proved wrong on this obviously!!
