trying to be honest......

Hi

My buildings insurance is up for renewal shortly, I have obtained several quotes, I have gone to Swintons through Quidco and have come across something unusual with their quote form.

It asks -

1)how many years no claims bonus you have
2)any claims within the last 3 years.

I had a buildings claim in January 2006 so in effect it is over 3 years ago, however, my current insurance company's renewal notice states that I have 6 years no claims bonus.

I have tried to enter the claim (just to be on the safe side) but it rejects it as its over 3 years ago, do you think I should change the no claims bonus element to 3 years and not 6 years as stated on my insurance renewal?????

I want to be honest with the Insurers but I am answering their questions exactly as they have been asked. I wonder if my old Insurance Company effectively 'stepped back' my no claims bonus to 3 years and have then added the 3 years claim free since 2006 onto it making 6 years, although I didnt think home insurance worked in that way

The easiest thing to do would be to call them I guess but then I would lose any cashback through Quidco.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

well your previous insurer is giving you 6 years NCB

and you haven't made a claim in the last 3 years.

Looked at independantly and with supporting evidence (ie proof of NCB) as opposed to looking at those questions together you are answering accurately. Perhaps you had protected NCB.

Someone else might know differently though....

"do you think I should change the no claims bonus element to 3 years and not 6 years as stated on my insurance renewal?????"

    Yes, definitely!

Just hover your mouse over the "?" icon next to the question on the Swinton site. The number of years discount you are claiming is clearly meant to reflect the number of years you've been claim free.

Just ignore the quirk of the 6 years being stated by your current insurer, the question is clear in what it is asking you to declare.

It would depend on the exact wording of their question eg if it says "How many years is it since your last claim" then you have to put three years.

The easiest way to get an answer is to ring the Insurer and ask them to confirm what you should put in, make a note of the persons name and date/ time

will do a re-quote I think and go for the 'claim free' years (3) rather than the misleading 6 years ncb that my current Insurers are giving me. Many thanks to all of you for your input and advice.

  • When it comes to filling in a proposal form, you may well find they suddenly ask you for claims in a longer period, so I would avoid saying you're claim-free for 6 years if you're not.

Ah, I am properly embarassed now, having read the full question under the '?' it does certainly say 'claim free years' so the new quote is now on the correct basis, my gut instinct told me that 6 years ncb was wrong, thats why I queried it!! At least I'm not too proud to say I made a mistake..... cheers for the advice again guys, (I will read things properly next time!)
