You can use a basic dish and receiver kit bought from CarreFour or similar which will give you BBC and ITV channels if pointed towards the Astra 2 satellite group which is 28.2E. Be wary that Astra 1 is a different group of satellites at 19.2E.

If you want to be able to receive channel 4 and 5, you need a Sky digibox with a Freesat card which costs £20 from Sky.

    Thanks

Try to get what you can in the UK and get a local french installer as the "Brit TV in France" installers can charge anything upwards of 200 pounds for a bog standard Sky box and then installation was 3x the local bloke's quote.

You could get a cheap set-up in France, which should fit the bill. or get something like a Technomate 1000D - a fantastic bit of kit. As others have said, you need to point it to Astra 2.

we dont need to get a sky card or anything? for pointing to Astra 2 i imagine we need a compass maybe to point exactly or someone has to be downstairs watching the tv to see what it does? sky digibox i imagine is going to be expensive. nice to know difference between the different set up so can evaluate what way to go. thanks for everyone's response so far. will thank you all shortly...just internet connection at mo is dodgy so taking ages every time say thanks!

we are taking over an old (1m) sky dish and a sky box we bought on ebay over this summer, gonna borrow a signal strength thingy and give it a bash and see if we can get the freesat channels.
