Singles Holidays/no single supplement

Hi all,

i'm trying to pluck up the courage to take a holiday abroad on my own! I like the sun + a bit of sightseeing. Has anyone any experience of either specialist singles tour operators or of taking a holiday with a 'normal' operator where you don't get charged single room supplements? can anyone recommend any destinations please?

    Go for it !

I only know adventure operators such as

    http://www.imaginative-traveller.com/

    www.intrepidtravel.com

    http://www.explore.co.uk/

    http://www.exodus.co.uk/

but I have definately replied to a simlar thread in the last month, so have a search.

The above tours will take you anywhere in the world and have backpacker type trips to comfort trips for all ages.

If you do DIY you pay per room anyway so you avoid the large supps and still have a nice double room to yourself and not the pokie little room at the end that not even a cat could turn round it (hate swinging cats)
    Look at https://www.travelrepublic.co.uk
or buy your flight the check out the hotels with https://www.hotelscomparison.com and https://www.wintersunshineholidays.co.uk
If you look anything like your passport photo....Your too ill to travel

some years ago (pre-internet travel explosion) I went to Greece on my own - booked with Manos twice and Thomas Cook once. With Manos I had no single supplement - it was May non-holiday time, Rhodes - with all the travel agent discounts I paid just over £200 for 2 weeks.

Greece accomodation is so cheap out of peak season so even if you booked a room on your own through one of the hotel only sites, then booked a flight seperately it would still work out cheap. Make sure there is loads to do in the day from where you are staying so that you dont get board with your own company unless you just want to bake on a beach.

I love travelling by myself - you always get to see more, do more, meet more interesting people. Instead of waiting for your friend to get over their hangover, wash hair, apply makeup, change clothes and have another cup of coffee before going out to somewhere you dont really want to go to. Alas not something I get to do much of these days.
  • Totally agree Lily, it's great to be able to please yourself and not wait for somebody else to get up in the morning and then dither what to do.
Much better and cheap to DIY if holidaying alone and sooo easy these days than it used to be.

...and if you go off season when not so busy often you will get a double/twin instead of the single. It reallly is better doing it yourself.

Lots of fantastic places to go, now whereabouts do you fancy?

DIY is the way to go, esp on your own.

What about staying in a hostel, great way of meeting other people out on their own.

    hello everyone,

thanks for all your fab ideas. I really fancy doing something different for a change. for years I've been the mum to everyone else and provided the type of holiday that everyone else wants - as you do with a family.

Said family are grown up and at Uni, husband is now ex (hoorah!) so I can do what I please. I do like warmth, so skiing etc is out of the question. I can scuba dive but don't especially want to - too much like hard work these days!

I do like to laze in the sun but could see myself getting bored quite quickly. I often used to take books on hols but bring them back unread! I'd quite like to do something useful with my time away as well as seeing a bit of the country. for instance a neighbour of mine knows someone who takes lorry loads of bikes etc over to romanian orphanages - I think they've only just come back from a trip, so there won't be another for a while.

What I'd hate more than anything is a matchmaking holiday, blimey, I'm getting used to freedom now so the thought of giving it up is just abhorrent to me!

Hi Weymouth Man, yes, I have the Solo's and Friendship travel brochures. i find their prices to be as expensive as other tourops. they say there is no single supplement but the cost of the holiday is more or less the same as the standard high street tourops (if you add in their single supplements)

i've found a previous thread and a link to Jules Vernes travel which looks really very good. Sadly, I'm not quite old enough to qualify for the Saga holidays - yet!
