If you had £400 to spend on Hamper where would you buy it & what would you buy?

why spend money on a few items from expensive stores when you can get a lot of items from cheaper stores its a summer fete .
most people who buy tickets as these events proably wouldnt know the difference between champagne and lambrini and would nto know caviar if it swam out of the sea and slapped them in the face ..
There is no need to be obnoxious, the OP has asked a good question.
How about including one of those red letter gift days (e.g a champagne hot air ballon ride etc)? That could make one special prize, a luxury food hamper could be another, and may be a drinks hamper could be the third (e.g full of some nice wines and beers as well as some posh soft drinks and cordials)?

personally I would keep it local eg local preserves, wines beers etc. A meat voucher from the local butchers etc.
That way you are not only keeping the food miles down, you are helping local business at the same time.
I would LOVE to win a hamper that was totally sourced within a certain mile radius.
HTHsealed pot challange #572!Garden fund - £0!!:D£0/£10k0 -
I think that a locally sourced hamper is a great idea. So many traditional hampers are "samey" and contain items that are a nice idea but wouldn't be used.
If you look for local items then I'm sure everyone would appreciate the thought that has gone into it - and who knows may even sell more raffle tickets as a result.
A beauty hamper is a good idea - who could resist bath bombs, bubble bath maybe even a voucher for a manicure?0 -
Thanks guys for the replies - I do like the idea of themed ones. The baskets for two of the Hampers are already in existence - in previous years people have been asked to return them. I won the xmas one and it was HUGE! As you can imagine there were loads in there but I would say that some of the items were typical of someone buying in the 80's (as the couple are). It is possible that the lady will not make it to hear about the fete so for this year at least I want to make sure that the 1st prize is still a food one as that has always been their tradition but I do like the idea of other hampers for 2nd and 3rd. The two themed ones I like the most are the Summer Holiday suitcase and the Breakfast Hamper with teacups etc...
For me this is not just about putting a Hamper together it is about making a tribute to a very special couple and I really want to get it right. This fete however is pretty big and I am organising it mostly by myself and time is ticking... I do like the idea of the locally sourced one but I do not think I have the time to put it together now. I was thinking of an online shop with M & S or Ocado (Do M & S do food online?) Fortnum and Mason - have heard of them but don't know if I can order online... I"m off to do a bit of research.
I was thinking of balsamic vinegar, twinings teas, etc but also some everyday items too. I would hate to win a hamper that was full of things that I would hardly ever use.
If I had to ask what three things would you love to see in a Hamper (alcohol not included as I will buy some wine) what would it be?
For me the top one is good quality Jam
Followed by good coffee
& then a bar of Green & Blacks Chocolate (but I only eat very dark chocolate)0 -
Mummy Jo...I think mamburys idea is REALLY great. I appreciate your running out of time, but it could be easier than you think. Is there not a local deli or farm shop? If so they tend to stock locally produced jams, chutneys, biscuits, cakes etc and butchers/fruiteers often have local honey etc. The butchers voucher is brill too as may pay for the winners xmas roast! Or how about a voucher included for a veg box?
Harrods is actually 'reasonable' as tea is £5.50ish in a nice tin, they do a tinned tea tri for £7.50 and lovely ceramic jars of coffee for £10.50. They do tinned biscuits from £4.95, candy from £3.25, half bottles of wine from £4.50 and full size from £7.50, (plus LSA wine glasses at £7.50), spirits from £9.50, choc from £7.50, oil and vinegar sets from £8.95, tea towels from £6.95, mugs £8.95, oven gloves £8.95, aprons £10.95, tea pots £19.95. So although quite dear if you had a £150 spend you could fill it with harrods stuff at not much more cost than waitrose really.0 -
Sorry Mummy Jo...me again!
Just thought...able and cole now sell an amazing range of store cupboard items and the quality is what most people would call luxury, you could fill the top hamper with products, plus a gift voucher with any change for a veg box
Off now lol x0 -

1. Really good coffee
2. Clotted Cream (my current addiction - limited to one small pot a month or I would live on it - you can buy proper Cornish Clotted Cream by mail order I think)
3. Some nice tea, or elderflower cordial."A cat can have kittens in the oven, but that don't make them biscuits." - Mary Cooper
"Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful" - William Morris
Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.0 -

British Honey: great for (British) hayfever as the bees use pollen from the UK- get as local as you can, honey also goes well in a variety of foods and hot drinks and helps the fading bee-economy which is in dire straits!
Coffee or Tea (personally for me, black tea from a unique or quirky store or place, if you can get to it, (not sure where you are) Borough Market has a stand which sells great leaf tea.
Seasonal fruit. At the moment its strawberrys -but may well change when your fete starts.0 -
Thanks again for your replies. The basket needs to be made up 4 weeks before the fete itself so unfortunately some perishable items will not be included - for obvious reasons.
I have phoned Sainsburys and M&S today. Sainsburys are willing to give us £10 gift card if we shop there - the guy even suggested I call all 5 of our local stores in the area and split the spend up to try and get £50 out of them. M&S would wrap it for us but that is it.
Just got to decide what & how to do it. I am still trying to work out how and if I can do a local one...
Thanks Jo0
