Honda Accord, cost of new ignition & keys?
Hello
We have a 1999 Honda Accord. Never had any problems with it but the other day the key would not turn in the ignition. It just turns enough to unlock the steering. After a lot of wiggling, WD40 and Googling, we suspect a worn/faulty ignition barrel.
A local garage took the steering column apart and managed to get the car started. They have quoted new ignition at £350, new keys and reprogramming £70 (they called Honda for parts, so I assume these are Honda part prices?) and they will charge £65 labour. So with VAT total will be about £560. Is this excessive or does it sound about right for genuine new parts and fitting?
After some googling I've also read some 'auto locksmiths' maybe able to repair ignition barrels? is this difficult to do on Honda's? I don't know if it would be worth trying or simply to go with all new parts (which btw are on order with a two week wait).
Basically I want to make sure I'm not getting ripped off as I always seem to get that feeling when walking away from garages/dealerships hence looking for some reassurance.
Thanks.

If its sticking and being a bit dodgy as opposed to actualy broken, then it could be fixed by someone with the right skills.
On the cheap end you could switch the transponders with the metal keys in a new key. It depends how it's built, some keys and barrels are just like home yale locks, its the electrical system that does the work.
I'm not a honda expert, but the costs for new keys and lock and fitting etc isn't too bad.
I think you might want to have a mooch about some honda forums and see if the key is very much part of the system or just a bit to make the lock go round as it were.0 -
Hi there
I have a honda accord 2000 plate and I had a new transponder key cut and programmed recently by my local auto locksmith for £50.
At the same time my autolocksmith advised me that my ignition barrel was loose and I was quoted a price of £50 for a new ignition barrel to be cut and which would work with the keys I already have so too be quoted £560 is rather excessive I would have thought...
If you reside in the birmingham/west midlands area I could PM you the auto locksmiths number if thats any help but if not speak to a couple auto locksmiths in your area for a more reasonable quote
Honda do charge more than £100 to cut and programe a transponder key as the chip inside the key is a rolling code so that the car is harder to steal in a breakin"One Man Can Make A difference" Michael Knight KNIGHTRIDER0
