Transferring music to external hard drive

I have now transferred music to the external hard drive three times. It would appear that the whole collection is added each time. Is there a way to add new music only or should I clear the hard drive of music before I transfer. If so, how?

what os are you running
if vista then it has a pretty reliable back up feature where you can tell it to back up new files only from a specific location(music folder) to a separate drive, so use that by right clicking on your c drive if thats where your music is and click properties, then go to tools and backup.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -

Try Microsoft SyncToy its a very good app and free too. You can download it here:

Or if you're a bit more hardcore then try Robocopy...

Does the job beautifully and gives me complete control over what happens.0 -

I (and quite a few others) have had a number of problems with SyncToy when copying large numbers of files. Worringly not all files were copied. You can check this by comparing the size and file count in the source & destination folders.
The open source "Free File Sync" does the same job, and is really easy to use and reliable:

I have screwed up. Using Microsoft SyncToy I connected up my external hard drive and started a process. It did not complete and the hard drive on my computer is now full as also is the external drive. What have I done? How can I correct it? It was my iTunes that was involved.0
